Mtg artists: Richard Wright

Scent of a Gamer

Richard Wright’s count of cards illustrated may be low, but his effect on the game has been huge. He has been employed as a style guide artist, where his work has shaped interpretations of various settings by other artists. His basic land set for Ravnica: City of Guilds are still well known and well regarded by many Magic players.

Plains (Ravnica: City of Guilds)

The setting of Ravnica is one endless city. This created issues when deciding how to interpret the Plains card, common to every Magic set, into the setting. In the ends the artists interpreted the flat landscape viewed from rooftops as their ‘plains’ cards. This one from Richard Wright is the exemplar.

Island (Ravnica: City of Guilds)

Likewise with the Island cards, a new interpretation was needed. Ravnica’s many urban waterways form islands made from cathedral-like suburbs.
