In the Call of Cthulhu game, the players take the roles of ordinary people drawn into the realm of the mysterious: detectives, criminals, scholars, artists, war veterans, and others who are curious or foolish enough to seek out the things that lurk in the shadows. Often, happenings begin innocently enough, until more and more of the workings behind the scenes are revealed. As the characters learn more of the true horrors of the world and the irrelevance of humanity, their sanity inevitably withers away. To gain the tools they need to defeat the horrors – mystic knowledge and magic – the playing characters must become intensely aware of the true nature of those things happening around them within the city of DuBois. To do this they must often obtain what we call Forbidden Lore.
Simply, Forbidden Lore is hideous insight into subjects not meant to be understood by the average mortal mind.
The History of Clearfield County is deep and rich. However, since the founding of the county, there have been forces at work struggling against the humans who wished to settle and conquer this land. Specifically, the City of DuBois is a focus point for several odd and paranormal circumstances. Therefore, there are certain things that “the common person” just should not know, and some information that is “meant for only certain people.”
The objective of an investigation is to get the facts so that a resolution of the complaint and situation can be achieved. Preparation for the investigation should include determining the investigator, making a list of potential witnesses, identifying and/or obtaining relevant documents, materials and practices; and developing preliminary questions to be asked. Consideration should be given as to whether to contact legal counsel in developing an overall strategy and/or assisting in the decision-making process. The following “five Ws” should be considered in preparation for the investigation and throughout the process: what happened, when did it happen, where did it happen, who was involved and why did it happen.
