DUBOIS: CITY OF THE DAMNED

The region now known as Clearfield County, and specifically the city of DuBois, was once known to the Susquehannock tribe (a branch of the Lenni Lanape) as OTOCSIN which is roughly translated as “Land of the Devils.” They called it this for many reasons. First, the forests were dense and dark giving a sense of eeriness and anxiety. Also, the region was plentiful with predatory animals that the Native Americans did not want to deal with like bears, mountain lions, and rattlesnakes. Next, the Native Americans believed that the trees held evil spirits which thirsted for the souls of men. And last, but not least, the region was thought to be inhabited by monstrous creatures that would feast on the bodies and souls of anyone entering the Dark Woods. The Native Americans knew that the monsters would remain in the Dark Woods, and remain there if they were unprovoked and undisturbed. Despite many warnings, the white man chose to settle OTOCSIN, and in doing so released the Devils from the Land.

George Shaffer was the first (recorded) permanent inhabitant of what is now DuBois, moving into the dark wilderness area in 1812. They lived in a log cabin near the present intersection of West Long Avenue. and Main Street. Shaffer died in 1812 leaving the land to Henry Shaffer. He did not value the land, seeing no real worth in the low lying swampy acres. Furthermore, he was disturbed by terrible dreams of tentacled creatures with rubbery flesh, lashing tentacles, and burning three-lobed eyes. Greed and fear led to him selling off the land acre by acre in parcel until it was all gone. With his pockets full, he departed the dark land known as OTOSCIN.

Settled officially in 1812 by Shaffer and platted in 1872, DuBois was incorporated as a borough in 1881 and as a city in 1914. While DuBois was founded as a lumber town, the mining of bituminous coal quickly became the chief industry in DuBois. Over the years there have been many unsuccessful attempts to combine the city with the surrounding Sandy Township. The town was founded by John Rumbarger, for whom the town was originally named. The Rumbarger Cemetery is all that survives of this original settlement. The town was later renamed for local lumber tycoon John DuBois, who came from a longstanding American family of French descent.

DuBois and the surrounding region has prospered from its abundance of natural resources. In its early days, the local economy depended heavily on timber and furs. The hardwood industry continues to be important to the region, and is home to one of the largest hardwood forests in the United States. After the railroad came to town, the coal mining industry grew quickly and provided fuel for steel mills, factories and power plants throughout the Commonwealth. This region leads the world in the powdered metal industry. Local manufacturers use powdered metal technology to make parts for manufacturing equipment, automobiles, and appliances. Natural gas wells have been part of the local landscape for decades, and politicians have been lining their pockets with bribes and poisoned money. This industry is poised to grow with companies drilling in the Marcellus Shale formation. Last but not least, DuBois offers a diverse and encompassing array of medical, mental health, and social services to promote, improve and sustain the quality of life in this thriving community.

And that is the reason that DuBois and its surrounding environs are now a gateway to the supernatural, monsters, demons, and ghostly presences. The things that go bump in the night are now free to roam, play, and devour. There is an interesting contrast between the general air of “normalcy” and the underlying menace of Evil that festers beneath the Façade.

I mean, don’t get me wrong, my friends. DuBois is a wonderful place to live. It’s a quaint little town with a rich history. It’s close to miles of forests, making the small town a haven for nature-lovers, hunters, hikers, and anybody seeking the quiet of the outdoors.

And DuBois is also home to antiques, inns, country stores, and golf, making it a popular tourist destination. Restaurants and shopping abound. Nearby Driftwood is the ancestral home of a famous area resident – Tom Mix, Hollywood’s “King of the Cowboys” in the silent era. The home of the Penn State DuBois campus, the town is accessible by DuBois Regional Airport in Falls Creek.

But when night falls, and the Darkness creeps in, things change in DuBois. The creatures of OTOCSIN awake from their slumbers in the dark, forgotten places and walk the streets looking for whom they may devour.

Evil thrives when good people do nothing. And that is part of the problem within DuBois. Most people don’t want to acknowledge the bad that is lurking just under the surface. They don’t want to see the homeless, the abused, the mentally ill, the meth fiends, and the crack houses. And they certainly don’t want to notice the creatures that prey on these individuals like vampires, ghouls, warlocks, and faeries.

And so the world keeps spinning and the community as a whole lives their daily lives unaware of the creatures that lurk just under the surface. They are very much like a swimmer within the ocean, unaware of the huge shark swimming below them. And until the teeth tear into their flesh, they swim along merrily enjoying the moment, blissfully unaware of the thing about to shred them into little bloody bits.

And when the shark comes, it is too late.

The world is a strange place. Maybe stranger than you think.

All of your life you have been told tales of monsters, vampires, werewolves, zombies, and fairies.  They’ve been used to scare children and entertain adults.  They’ve been the subject of  novels, comic books, and innumerable TV programs.

Its all in good clean fun, isn’t it?

Sure.

What if there really were trolls under the South Brady Street bridge?  What if ghosts do haunt Rumbarger Cemetary? What if every fairy-tale and urban legend was based in truth?  What if there was a world that you didn’t see?  Not that you couldn’t see it, but were taught not to see from the time you were a little child?

What if everything you think you know was a well crafted lie?

Welcome to the Real World.

The world where Truth can be seen by the naked eye.

It’s called DuBois, The City of the Damned.

  1. So this accounts for ALL of the strange and creepy things that go on here? Have you heard of Skull Island on Wolf Creek? Another seriously disturbing story in the area! The murder or suicide of Estele Clymer and the Lost Cache of Wolf Run? 20 pounds of Gold, Silver, Gems and Jewels buried in the woods off of Rt 219! Could this be connected to OTOCSIN?

    • Well, Jack, the truth is that the Great Old Ones were, the Great Old Ones are, and the Great Old Ones will be. The location does not matter to them for they wish to consume the entire world. So I suppose you are right.

    • You could start researching this information by talking to the folks at the DuBois Historical Society, Dusti. They have a lot of information about the Native Americans and Otoscin. As far as not being afraid, I congratulate your courage. After all, fear is the oldest and strongest emotion of mankind.

  5. This is a great story and something I have said about the Du Bois, Pa. area for many years. I lived in the area and started my life there. But as time went by I seen things I did not like, one being greed. The elders would be sick to see what has become of the area. It was not and is not what they had in mind. Many of the people who have the money or the power do not share it. In fear of losing everything they worked for. Life is not to be lived in fear, but in harmony of one another.

    • TNT McAllen: It would seem that you understand greatly the will of the Great Old Ones. What part of DuBois did you grow up in? And how can you help us all find harmony during such discord?

      • I lived in Brockway, and worked in Du Bois. I have many, many relatives that still live there.
The community needs to communicate and learn to share. Don’t always think that everybody is out to get you. Stop with the what am I going to get out of it phase. I would do for people without asking for anything but most are waiting for handout after helping others.

  6. I lived and grew up in this town. It can easily take over you and destroy your entire being. I have never been so happy to get away. when I was growing up I always said that Dubois was cursed by a higher power. I have seen good and bad from that town, and people have came and went, but the curse is still there.

    • One of the local prophets claimed that there is a Fire Dragon living under the city that is guarding Aztec Gold. The curse on the gold radiates throughout the city. Perhaps that is why you experienced these overwhelming feelings. The Elder Gods watch and wait for the Stars to be Right.

  7. I live in dubois and never thought about blogging about it. I have a wordpress blog too. aliprescott.wordpress.com.

I will say that I think that much of what you say goes around all over the place..not just in DuBois. I’ve been to quite a few places and have seen what you talk about. So it may not be a Native American myth….but perhaps just people making poor decisions.

    • You can always begin your own path to discovering the secrets of the Old Ones. Just use caution. There are horrors beyond life’s edge that we do not suspect, and once in a while man’s evil prying calls them just within our range

    Like

    • Do not be offended that cigars are symbols of wealth, power, and glamour. All life is only a set of pictures in the brain, among which there is no difference betwixt those born of real things and those born of inward dreamings, and no cause to value the one above the other

    • Mr. or Mrs. Babyjesus:

Thank you for your kind words. There are not many persons who know what wonders are opened to them in the stories and visions of their youth; for when as children we learn and dream, we think but half-formed thoughts, and when as men we try to remember, we are dulled and prosaic with the poison of life. But some of us awake in the night with strange phantasms of enchanted hills and gardens, of fountains that sing in the sun, of golden cliffs overhanging murmuring seas, of plains that stretch down to sleeping cities of bronze and stone, and of shadowy companies of heroes that ride caparisoned white horses along the edges of thick forests; and then we know that we have looked back through the ivory gates into that world of wonder which was ours before we were wise and unhappy

    • Are you really that blind, when it comes to buying booze and tobacco products with food stamps? I will give you my food stamp card to use, if you get me a couple of cases of beer or a carton of cigarettes. (also works with WIC) This has been going on for years in Du Bois. Sorry to bust your bubble, but someone needs to shed a light. I think the programs need to have ID to go with it. Not to point out folks, but to get the mess cleaned up.

  10. Hey, Big Rich…You are a real piece of work, brother…What DuBois has become is more a symptom of Obama’s America, than some BS Indian legends, but rest assured, it is a sickness that has permeated the entire fabric of this country. Perhaps if you spent less time in front of your computer, and actually left your house, you would realize this! Rock on, Space Cowboy, Rock on!

Firstly, we can hardly be brothers. I have none.

Secondly, Contrary to what you may assume, I am not a pessimist but an indifferentist- that is, I don’t make the mistake of thinking that the… cosmos… gives a damn one way or the the other about the especial wants and ultimate welfare of mosquitoes, rats, lice, dogs, men, horses, pterodactyls, trees, fungi, dodos, or other forms of biological energy.

Also, I wonder, how much of my article did you actually read?

      • Your article wasn’t exactly The Bible…so it wasn’t too terribly difficult to read. It’s awfully easy to bitch and moan, isn’t is? Why not fix the blame where it belongs, on the leadership in this entire country that has figured out that it is possible to throw tax $$$, entitlements, and anything else they can think of to buy the votes of lazy dopes who live like pigs, but are able to drag their butts out to vote every 4 years to keep the Gravy Train rolling!

  11. Justice Stick: Indeed, you are right, sir. But I must say that I never found the Bible difficult to read save when I was studying the Ancient Greek. As you said, it is easy to sit around and complain. That is why I am happy to say that at least a small group of Heroes have banded together to fight back against the evil that literally seeps through the streets of DuBois like the flood water did only a week ago. Will you join us, sir? Will you help us defeat the whispers in the darkness. Or will you simply answer the Call of Cthulhu like all the others? The decision is yours, Justice Stick.

  14. I lived in Dubois for a total of 2 years and while I was there I just wanted to leave the town. I think it has been the worst town that I have ever lived in. I’m normally one not to believe in this stuff. But I do believe in demons and while I was living in Dubois I always had a sense of anger and hate. And it was stronger than ever. As growing up in a church listening to my father every Sunday speak the bible I have learned many different ways that Demons can affect you. And I must say that name “Land of the Devil’s” fits very well for Dubois. Because once I left Dubois that sense of anger and hate were gone.

There is a “force” in that town, when I was away before and come back, you can feel and see the darkness overhead miles out. I’ve stated it before, I’m stating it again…There’s something about that town.

  19. I’ve noticed for over 30 years that any and all improvements in DuBois tend to be focused in the areas that are most often visited by people who possess a greater level of wealth than the rest of the community. It’s the same for housing. Local landlords are well aware of the poverty in this area, but pride themselves on charging 800 dollars per month for a 2-bedroom house. The rich are squeezing the poor as much as possible, and they’re also making harsher laws to ensure that crimes and criminals are constantly being fabricated – a good example is the City Code Inspector issuing fines for uncut grass or weeds. Sure, a yard with 6-foot grass and weeds can be unsightly, but fining people who have 6+inches of grass the day after a two-week rain do not deserve fines – but DuBois is just like your favorite high school bully: picking on the poor, elderly, and those with mental challenges…all while they gather in local fire halls and country clubs to talk about their love for all things Republican.
